Sales Tax Essay Example for Free
Sales Tax Essay OBJECTIVE à à à à à à à à à à à The objective of this work is to discuss sales tax issues from the viewpoint of both the citizen and the Budget Director. Reviewed will be issues of ââ¬Ëvolatilityââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëreliabilityââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëequityââ¬â¢ as well as how the sales tax impacts activities of government such as economic development, community initiatives and service provision. Finally this work will answer the question of whether there are any other taxes or revenue sources to substitute for the sales tax as well as stating why or alternatively why there is not an existing substitute. INTRODUCTION: SALES TAX ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT à à à à à à à à à à à Sales taxes are collected at the local and state levels and utilized by the government in service provision to the citizens of the United States. The United States imposes sales taxes in both state and local administrations in which the customer is charged a combined rate which bundles together (USA Sales Use Tax, 2006) the state tax with the local tax. A merchant is required to charged a sales tax if the business has nexus. A nexus is defined as a substantial physical presence. (USA Sales Use Tax, 2006) Not all products are subject to the sales tax and different states exempt difference products. Sales taxes are applied on the end purchase of goods in retail sales. Economic development has been defined as a multi-faceted approach to the development of policies and programs designed to preserve, enhance and promote a vibrant and successful business community. (Economic Development Action Program, 2005) The health and success of the businesses in communities are stated to be directly linked to the quality of life experienced by residents in that community (Economic Development Action Program, 2005) which is of primary importance to the entire city or municipality. Creation of jobs and generation of sales tax revenues provide a major contribution to fund the initiatives of service provision with the city. The economic development within a city of municipality is greatly dependent on sales tax revenues in most U.S. states. VOLATILITY, RELIABILITY, AND EQUITY ââ¬ËVolatilityââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËReliabilityââ¬â¢ are the two primary considerations of a budget director when revenues raised by taxes are spent on new initiatives. Hirsch et al state that Reliability and Volatility are that which marks the outcome of the question which asks: ââ¬Å"Are new revenues raised by the taxes relatively stable over time or are they excessively volatile and difficult to predict? It is a fact that generation of revenues from sales taxes may be unpredictable since these revenues are greatly dependent on seasonal factors and economic conditions therefore, merchants may experience a really great Christmas hence the sales tax revenues for the government will be great as well however, a lean year for merchants will also result in the coffers of the government for spending in economic development being quite thin as well. In a journal article relating to the impact of sales tax on the economy of the state of California it is stated that: ââ¬Å"If times are good and consumption is high, there will be more revenue from sales taxes than otherwise. If times are bad and layoffs and unemployment are up, personal income taxes will be reduced. Some taxpayers will lose their jobs or not have opportunities to work overtime. Sluggish economic activity will hurt profits and thus collections from corporate income taxes. Similarly, if times are bad, certain kinds of welfare-related expenditures may increase. While the linkage between economic developments and the status of the budget is clear, the actual budget process involves making a forecast of what those economic developments will be. Then budget forecasters must estimate precisely how the assumed developments will affect revenueâ⬠(Hirsch, et al, 2004) The third element is that of Equity which is one of the five principles stated by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) that were compiled in 1988 with input from lawmakers and academics. The principle involving Equity along with the other principles for sound tax policy. The five principles are: à (1) Provision of appropriate revenues (sufficiency, stability, and certainty of revenues produced) (2) Neutrality; (3) Equity; (4) Easy and economical to administer; (5) accountability ââ¬â (i) taxpayers are accountable for payment of their taxes (ii) tax agencies are accountable for administration and enforcement of the tax laws efficiently and fairly; and (iii) lawmakers accountable for the integrity of the tax laws. (Hirsch et al, 2004) III. VIOLATION OF PRINCIPLES IN NEW YORK ECONOMIC DEVELOPEMNT In a recent testimony before the U.S. Senate in a hearing before the Subcommittee on International Trade of the Committee on Finance earlier this year given by Walter Hellerstein who is said to be: ââ¬Å"the nations leading legal academic authority on state and local taxationâ⬠stated is that a New York economic development incentive to attract sales to the New York exchanges was a discriminatory tax to the Boston Stock Exchange that viewed the incentive as diverting economic activity from the Boston exchange, a view with which the U.S. Supreme Court concurred. (Testimony of Walter Hellerstein, 2006) Stated as well is that the economic development incentive for its fledging wine industry was a discriminatory tax to sellers of alcoholic beverages produced in other states, a view with which the U.S. Supreme Court concurred. (Ibid) SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION à à à à à à à à à à à Clearly the sales tax scheme or plan of a city or municipality involves the necessary view which is all-inclusive of the factors that will impact the revenues realized from sales taxes and as well are able to realize the volatility or alternatively the reliability of the sales tax revenues in the budget plan. Then the comprehension of the sales taxes as they affect the individuals within the community both from the advantages of the economic development in the community as well as the impact the increase of sales tax will have on the spending habits in times that are characterized by layoffs and unemployment in the area. Finally it must be comprehended that all of this is inherently linked in the planning of sales taxes, city budgets and economic development in that economic development works to ensure a healthy and quality lifestyle for the taxpayers that reside in the community, and as well that economic development furthers the growth of businesses and employment within the community. These successful individuals and households within the community in turn replenish the community or city coffers with the sales taxes on the purchases that they make in the community thereby funding even more economic development in the community. Last, the principles that have been reviewed in this research as set out by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) must be followed in order to avoid the situation that the economic development initiatives in New York and Hawaii experienced in being found in violation of those principles by the U.S. Supreme Court. Assassins Creed in Popular Video Game Culture Essay -- Globalist Agend
Video games have risen in popularity in America the past couple decades where popular gaming franchises influence or reflect modern American culture. Many video game franchises are popular but one franchise that has stood out in video game media is Assassin's Creed. Assassin's Creed is a franchise that consists of video games, spinoffs, comics, graphic novels, animated films, figurines, weapon replicas, clothing, and other merchandise. Only focusing on the video game branch of the franchise, the series began in 2007 with its first installment released. The franchise was planned out as a spin-off for the Prince of Persia series but developed into their own franchise. Currently there are seven main games in the franchise all of which have historical fiction, action-adventure, and stealth genres. The games feature dense narratives, historical buildings with the ability to climb freely on them, and the iconic hidden blade. Since the first game, roughly around 57 million copies of the fr anchise were sold world wide (ââ¬Å"About Ubisoftâ⬠). Compared to other popular franchises such as Grant Theft Auto, that sold 150 million, and Halo, that sold 50 million, Assassin's Creed franchise has its fair share of popularity. Not focusing on only statistics, go to any video game convention and you would most likely see people dressed up as assassins or see merchandise of the franchise. So in video game culture now Assassin's Creed seems fairly popular. Considering how popular Assassin's Creed is in America, the game has aspects that reflect common ideas, morals, and traits that are present in American culture as well as other popular American media. The most obvious trend Assassin's Creed has is the violent aspects in the game. Assassinââ¬â¢s Creed is ... ... America, 10 Sep. 2009. Web. 28 Nov. 2013. An article by Michael Shermer explaining a reason why Americans might believe in conspiracies. I will use this source to describe the conspiracy trends in American media. It relates to the trend in Assassin's Creed with the concept of Assassins vs Templars and all the conspiracy theories in the historical parts of the game and partly in the modern aspect. This will help me come up with a theory on why people might like this trend and synthesize what it says about our culture. ââ¬Å"Top 100 Most Popular Games.â⬠G4TV. NBCUniversal. 2013. Web. 28 Nov. 2013. A brief list of the top hundred popular games that sold in 2012. This the list is valid because other sources, such as GameRadar and IGN, have similar lists with the same games. I am simply using this source to point out the amount of violent games that are popular.

Why Math is a Requirement for My Lifelong Career goal
Life constantly presents new problems. The more sophisticated our society becomes, the more complex the problems become. We as individuals are constantly solving problems. For example when we consider ways to save money, reduce our expenses, budget our money or even save for a vacation, we are always dealing with numbers. Throughout this personnel reflection you will see why math is so important in my life long career goal, which is my BBA in Business management in the medical field. First and foremost my job will entail being a supervisor/manager of a nursing staff whether it be Registered nurses (RNââ¬â¢s) or Licensed Practical nurses (LPNââ¬â¢s). This is ultimately what I want to do. This job includes schedules for the nurses, patients, scheduling tests for the patients. I will also need to know the international metric system along with dosage calculations, one must know three important pieces of information, the desired dose, the dosage strength and the medicationsââ¬â¢ unit of measure (Survey of Math p 609). I will also use mathematics in my career by doing schedules, coordinating the staff on different shifts, making sure the staff is not working over 8-9 hours unless it is necessary, also making sure the staff doesnââ¬â¢t overlap one anotherââ¬â¢s schedule and handling the payroll. It is very important for people that work in the medical field to know what their doing when it comes to measurements of medication particularly, any miscalculationââ¬â¢s due to a staff members error can lead to 1) losing your job, 2) losing your license, and or prison time if it is fatal. One example of a similar incident that was not to long ago, and is still in the hands of the courts involved Michael Jackson and Dr. Conrad Murray. Reports stated that Michael Jackson died from a propofol overdose; propofol is a drug that reduces anxiety and tension, and promotes relaxation consciousness. Dr. Conrad Murray is being charged with involuntary manslaughter for giving Michael Jackson multiple medications intravenously; which is a needle directly into the vein. Reports have stated that Dr.à Murray gave Michael Jackson valium which is a sedative, along with numerous amounts of pain medication and anti-depressant medications throughout a 10 hour period. These multiple medications were found in Michael Jacksonââ¬â¢s toxicology report. They state that Michael Jackson had enough medication in his body to sedate a large animal (KTLA. com info). Another similar incident was that of a oncologist that wrote orders for a new salvage regimen that employed higher doses of chemotherapy than usual. The patient developed acute renal failure and required weeks of dialysis, but ultimately recovered, and the tumor responded. The physician later discovered that he had mistakenly ordered four times the recommended amount of the nephrotoxic drug in the treatment regimen. The physician decided not to tell the patient, 6 months later the tumor progressed and the patient obtained a second opinion. The patient learned of the error the first physician made and sued the doctor settling for $75,000 dollars (PubMed Central). The patient survived and the tumor was taken care of, but as you can see mistakes are made like this every day, sometimes people donââ¬â¢t get another chance. Most of the time, the mistakes are made mathematically. The medical field is very crucial when it comes to mathematics. You must be on top of things, re-read your care plan every time you need to administer medications. A care plan can vary from patient to patient, but for the most part it included numerous activities, such as administering medications, careful documentation of dosages and avoiding interactions. Starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products. Administering therapies and treatment, observing the patient and recording those observations; and consulting with the physician or supervisor on duty (ââ¬Å"Summary report for 29 ââ¬â 111. 00 ââ¬â Registered nurses,â⬠2010, Tasks). In this line of work documentation of everything that happens with the patient is very important. In conclusion, my math 103, survey of mathematics taught me a lot. I learned how to subtract, add, multiply, and divide w negative and positive numbers. This was one of my greatest challenges. Reducing fractions, radicals, algebra, solving an equation, percentage formulaââ¬â¢s, application of percents, the american system of measurement, the scientific system, set theories, and more. I learned a great deal and will be able to take this with me in the future for my career goal. In all honesty, Iââ¬â¢ve never been all the great in the math field, after taking this course, along with taking advantage if the tutors Bryant & Stratton offers, I feel very pleased with myself and what Iââ¬â¢ve learned. It was a very positive fortification and I will take this with me, where ever I go.

Dangers of Childhood Immunizations Essay
Evidence Supporting Thesis ââ¬Å"In order to understand the ââ¬Ësafetyââ¬â¢ of vaccines, you have to know several things, including how a babyââ¬â¢s immune system works from birth onwards, and what vaccines do biochemically in the body. That work has never been done.â⬠Found in the book Just a Little Prick by Hilary Butler No one medical treatment will work the same way on every person it is used on, so why would we expect for generalized vaccines to work the same way in every child? It is merely impossible to know how your childââ¬â¢s immune system will respond to vaccines, but there are consequences set in place for parents like myself who do not believe in giving annual vaccines. For example: if your childââ¬â¢s vaccines are not up to date, then your child is not allowed to go to school, be involved in team sports, and a host of other activities. Main Points Studies have not been done to show how each individual vaccine affects the body in both positive and negative ways. Alternative measures should be available for those parents who are against vaccinating their children. More studies need to be conducted to see what role, if any, vaccinations play in the behavioral aspect of a childââ¬â¢s development. Studies have not been done to show how each individual vaccine affects the body in both positive and negative ways. What are the positive effects that vaccines have on a childââ¬â¢s body? Vaccines can help to prevent some of the serious complications that occur as a result of serious diseases. Vaccines help to ensure that if a child comes in contact with a disease, they will only develop a mild case of the disease versus a child never having the vaccine who develops a natural immunity to the disease which will in turn cause the non-vaccinated child to have very severe complications. Varicella Infection leads to Pneumonia if no vaccine has been given. Polio Infection leads to permanent paralysis if no vaccine has been given. Mumps Infection could lead to deafness and infertility in young boys if no vaccine has been given. Hib infection can lead to permanent brain damage if no vaccine has been given. Vaccinations help to build immunity to diseases that may be foreign strains of normal diseases. * * à What are the negative effects that vaccines have on a childââ¬â¢s body? Because there have not been any studies on the exact biochemical effect that vaccines have on a childââ¬â¢s body, there is not much supporting evidence to why vaccines are negative. However, there are some studies that suggest that vaccines may be closely tied to various behavior problems such as adhd, add, and the ever controversial autism. It has been proven that vaccines cause mild side effects such as swelling, fever, flu-like symptoms, and in more severe cases: seizures. Alternative measures should be available to parents who are opposed to vaccinating their children. The bottom line School age children are required to have up-to-date vaccinations before being allowed to attend school. There arenââ¬â¢t any alternative options for parents who do not believe in vaccinating their children Children are not allowed to attend school. Children are not allowed to participate in group activities such as team sports, and clubs. Are we really harming our children by vaccinating them? Studies have not been done to show how each individual vaccine affects the body in both positive and negative ways. Alternative measures should be available for those parents who are against vaccinating their children. * 3.More studies need to be conducted to see what role, if any, vaccinations play in the behavioral aspect of a childââ¬â¢s development.

Organic, Gluten
Organic, Gluten Executive Summary Despite the recent spur in the concern for whole-wheat products and gluten-free food, the hype for healthy nutrition seems to have died down. This has triggered a major concern in the companies that produce organic bakery and other gluten free products.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Organic, Gluten-Free Whole Grain Products specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Moreover, the emergence of new entrants in the specified industry has triggered not only a drop in prices and, thus, in revenues, but also a considerable decrease in the amount of customers for the company. Although the increase in competition rates can be viewed as an opportunity for the organisation to explore new opportunities in research and development by creating a new brand product and, therefore, define a new manner of marketing whole-wheat products to the target audience, the threat of losing an impressive part of the annual income is still quite tangible. Herein the necessity to revamp the companyââ¬â¢s image and to reconsider some of the issues related to marketing and research and development lies. With the adoption of a more reasonable advertisement approach that will incorporate active use of modern media and a flexible financial policy, the baking company in question will be capable of becoming the leader in the specified industry. More importantly, this approach will allow for a complete reinvention of the industry. A complex approach, which will allow for creating a brand product and an interesting legend behind it, will help improve the revenues of the company and raise demand for whole-wheat products. Marketing Audit It is suggested that the marketing audit should be conducted on a monthly basis. Thus, major issues will be spotted and at the same time enough time will be left for introducing changes to the current marketing strategy.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In addition to the assessment of the marketing strategy efficacy, the audit will help review the effects of the external and the internal marketing environments on the overall course of the company (Phillips, 2014, p. 221). As far as the external elements of the marketing audit are concerned, it is essential to nail down the key specifics of the target customers. In the case in point, the basic characteristics of the denizens of the UK population, which are considered to be the key consumers of the whole grain products, must be identified. As a study shows, the decision process, which a typical buyer has to go through before selecting the desired product, presupposes that a compromise between three key elements, i.e., the price, the quality and the enjoyment of the product, should be made. Consequently, it will be essential that the pricing strategy along with a well established legend behind the b rand product, should be developed prior to offering the goods to the customers. In our companyââ¬â¢s case, the emphasis must be put on the effects, which the brand product (i.e., the whole grains yogurt) is going to have on the customer and the taste properties which the product under consideration possesses. At present, the companyââ¬â¢s products can be characterized by a very tasty flavor, yet the legend behind the key goods has not been developed well enough and does not stand out of the range of similar ideas. Therefore, it will be imperative that the customer should associate the companyââ¬â¢s goods with a very specific idea, e.g., the idea of restoring oneââ¬â¢s energy balance and consuming essential nutrients without the aftereffects that other products of a similar nature have (i.e., the digestion issues that regular yogurt may cause).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Organic, Gluten-Free Whole Grain Products specifically for you for o nly $16.05 $11/page Learn More SWOT Analysis Strengths Great experience in the industry and a good grasp of the latest technologies in whole-wheat goods production; Equipment working perfectly and kept in a proper condition due to regular maintenance procedures; Adherence to the companyââ¬â¢s ethics, which dictates that no fraudulent actions should be taken by the company staff; High quality standards and customer satisfaction as the top priority of the organisation; Incorporation of e-commerce into the companyââ¬â¢s marketing framework and, therefore, the ability to promote the product to all denizens of the population Weaknesses Flaws in the marketing strategy, which does not allow for showcasing the benefits of the product; Dependency on the trends in dieting and, as a result, a major drop in the amount of customers once the fade dies down; Lack of a recognisable brand that the customers could relate to and, therefore, be inclined towards consumin g; Lack of a coherent leadership strategy, which could improve motivation rates among the staff and, thus, increase their performance efficacy. Opportunities Introduction of major innovations and the following reinvention of the food industry in general and the whole grain production area in particular; Major advance in the specified area and the following strengthening of the companyââ¬â¢s position in the target market; Attainment of customer satisfaction through the improvement of communication between the customer and the company staff; Development of a new brand, which will represent the company in the target market and become a household name for whole grain products among the target audience; Design of an elaborate leadership strategy, which will help Threats Failure to locate the appropriate leadership strategy and, therefore, motivate the staff so that the performance rates could be enhanced; Emergence of new and more successful entrants, which will be capable of achieving more impressive results within a shorter amount of time; An unfortunate choice of the new brand and the resulting misrepresentation of the organisation. As the SWOT analysis shows, the company is currently in a desperate need for being revamped and having a brand product to promote. The specified need, however, can only be satisfied once a thorough marketing study is conducted and the key demands of the potential customers are identified. More to the point, it is crucial that the latter should also be distilled among the general audience and that the key methods of advertising the product to them should be identified. The SWOT analysis also shows quite clearly that the company lacks the product that could represent it in the realm of the UK market, not to mention the global environment. The design of the brand may not break new grounds, yet it has to be in line with the companyââ¬â¢s vision, mission and ethics, which concern the provision of high quality produc ts to the customers and care for the latterââ¬â¢s health. In addition, the fact that the current leadership approach leaves much to be desired is clearly the point of major concern. Unless the organization establishes a proper leadership approach, the motivation of the staff will drop inevitably. It is suggested that transformative leadership style should be integrated into the company management. Thus, the organization will be capable of enhancing personal and professional responsibility in its staff, thus, leading to a major increase in their performance. It is assumed that incentives should be suggested so that people could become more loyal to the company and strive for better results. Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In addition, it is highly desirable that the number of products to offer the customers should increase; for instance, the advertisements could focus on not merely the fact that the chips produced by the organisation are healthy, but also that they come in several types of flavours, etc. The comparison of the four companies has shown that the organization in question is going to face rather tough competition. The Nestle subdivision producing whole grain food seems to be the key threat to the stability of the company. Since Nestle rarely promotes itself as the producer of whole grain food and the related products, it can be suggested that the organization under analysis should stake on organizing events that will help attract more attention to its products and, therefore, become the leader in the specified industry. Marketing Objectives As it has been stressed above, the company is currently facing the necessity to develop a brand product, as well create an attracting and interesting legend for it. Therefore, a successful introduction of the new product into the target market can be considered the key objective that the organisation should strive for achieving at present. Moreover, several types of media should be used in the course of the product marketing. To be more specific, traditional media, including TV commercials, advertisements in magazines, booklets with a full list of the products suggested by the organisation, billboard advertisements, etc., will be utilised for attracting the audienceââ¬â¢s attention on a par with the modern media tools, e.g., social networks. Apart from the specified objectives, the company will be striving towards promoting not only its goods, but also its image as the company that values its customers and cares about their health. This will require that the organization should reconsider its current values and make the promotion of healthy lifestyle its basic mission. It is assumed that the entrance to both supplier and influ encer markets will help the company promote itself and reach the top of the modern food industry. Marketing Strategies Viral Marketing As far as marketing strategies are concerned, viral marketing should be viewed as the basis for the companyââ¬â¢s promotion technique development (Chaston Mangles 2002, p. 33). In fact, making viral marketing should be incorporated into the companyââ¬â¢s marketing approach as the extension of the organisationââ¬â¢s vision. Indeed, seeing that the company puts a very strong emphasis on healthy lifestyle and the promotion thereof to the target population, the idea of raising awareness on the subject matter through viral marketing makes quite a lot of sense. Diversity Marketing However, apart from the specified strategy, diversity marketing must be included into the organisationââ¬â¢s approach as well. Seeing that the company will target at attracting a variety of customers of both genders, coming from various backgrounds and representing v arious nationalities and ethnicities, the company will have to develop several methods of marketing depending on the target demographics (Andreason 2001, p. 109). Online and E-Mail Marketing As it has been stressed above, the incorporation of modern information technology is vital for the companyââ¬â¢s progress; therefore, the Internet should also be viewed as the place, where the company can promote its goods (Baker 2003, p. 28). Moreover, the use of the Internet will help attract younger audience, whereas the traditional media can be considered the tool for inviting the older one to try the companyââ¬â¢s products. Online marketing is a perfect way of advertising the companyââ¬â¢s goods. However, with the emergence of browser extensions, which block advertisements (e.g., AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, etc.), online marketing has become quite pointless. Therefore, e-mail marketing (i.e., sending the target customers e-mails regularly) must be viewed as an option. E-mail marketing, however, should be used very carefully, as many people find consistent messages with little of essential information rather obnoxious. Social Media Marketing and Cross Media Marketing It is impossible to underrate the significance of social media in most peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Therefore, the company cannot possibly overlook the chance to promote its goods to the target audience without seeming too insistent. At this point, the importance of gaining loyalty among the users of social networks is essential for the company in question. By subscribing to the newsfeed that will be provided regularly by the company via its social network profile, people will be able to learn more about the companyââ¬â¢s products, its vision, mission and brands, and, therefore, will soon become interested in the goods that the firm has to offer. Because of a high level of diversity among the ranks of the companyââ¬â¢s target demographics, the significance of traditional media is not to be forgotten, e ither; thus, it will be required to place advertisements on billboards and public transport. By crossing several types of media in its endeavours of speaking to as many denizens of the stateââ¬â¢s population as possible, the company will engage in the so-called cross media marketing. Measurement Plans and Reviewing Naturally, it will be necessary to develop a framework for evaluating the companyââ¬â¢s progress. While it is quite tempting to restrict the companyââ¬â¢s evaluation to the use of a standard framework, it is desirable that a specific assessment plan should be developed based on the existing methods (Cranfield School of Management 2000, p. 11). First and most obvious, the financial progress made by the company, i.e., the increase in its annual revenue, should be evaluated. In order to carry out the assessment, one will have to compare the results displayed by the firm in 2015 to the ones that the company will deliver at the end of 2016 with the help of financial a udits (ââ¬ËCompany assessmentââ¬â¢ 2014). A combination of a SWOT analysis (Ayub et al. 2013, p. 92) and the comparison between the financial statement of 2015 and 2016 will be required in order to provide a detailed overview of the changes that the company will have undergone by the time (Doyle 2002, p. 23). It would also be a good idea to incorporate the Millennium Development Goals (Spitzer Martinuzzi 2013, p. 4) into the assessment as the staple of a proper analysis of the companyââ¬â¢s progress. Apart from the aforementioned tools, the evaluation of the leadership style efficacy (Kotler, Lane Keller K 2009, p. 118) will be required. The specified assessment must be twofold, as it will incorporate the evaluation of the staffââ¬â¢s motivation and the change in the social and professional responsibility rates among the stuff as a result of the change in the leadership approach. As far as the motivation assessment tool is concerned, an integration of several framework s will also be required so that the slightest alterations in the behavioural patterns of the employees should be easily traceable. Finally, the evaluation of the companyââ¬â¢s sustainability will be required so that the progress should be clear and that the problem issues should be located easily. The sustainability assessment, in its turn, can be carried out with the help of the instruments such as the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (Samuel-Fitwi et al. 2012, p. 185) and the S-CORE Sustainability Assessment (ââ¬ËS-COREâ⠢ Sustainability Assessmentââ¬â¢ 2015, para. 1). Contingency/Risk Factors Naturally, certain risks are expected in the process of establishing the company in the new market and creating the brand that will supposedly revolutionise the industry. An alternative evolution of the target market, which has not been taken into account in the business plan, is the key threat to the companyââ¬â¢s further progress. Indeed, as it has been stressed above, t he hype for healthy food may eventually disintegrate and the whole grain products will become unclaimed among the target audience. One must admit, though, that a smart advertisement campaign, which will support the idea of healthy diet, will help address the specified issue by attracting peopleââ¬â¢s attention to the problem an prompting them to reassess their views on the subject matter. Another risk associated with the marketing campaign concerns the product risk. While creating a whole grain product, such as yogurt, is a possibility for an organisation that operates in the food industry, there is still a major threat of the company failing to add the unique element that will make the brand instantly recognisable. Indeed, seeing that the concept of whole grain yogurt is not new and that several organisations have already introduced similar projects to the global market, the company will have to be especially inventive in the description of the production technology and the lege nd behind the brand. The fact that the efficacy of leadership strategy has not been verified yet may also be considered a major threat to the companyââ¬â¢s performance and, therefore, quite a palpable threat for the organisationââ¬â¢s existence. It should be noted, though, that the lack of cohesion in determining the marketing approach and the development of a proper motivational strategy for the staff to deliver better results shows that the company lacks transformative leadership. Herein the necessity to switch to the above-mentioned leadership approach lies. Conclusion Becoming a recognised brand in the food industry is not easy, especially when aiming at its whole grain products field. Because of the inconsistency in their enthusiasm towards the consumption of healthy food, target customers may be irresponsive towards the marketing campaign held by the company. Therefore, an array of tools for tricking people into paying attention to the product, including the creation of a unique brand with an original legend behind it can be considered a solution to the problem. By incorporating several tools for assessing the efficacy of the proposed plan, one will be able to not only identify the areas, where the plan in question succeeded, but also retrieve instructions on the issues that need further improvement, as well as the strategies, which will allow the company become even more successful in the target market. It is expected that the adoption of the plan described above will help the organisation become one of the market leaders and raise its annual income by at least 20%, thus, setting the premises for the future revenue streak. Dissection and Isolation of a frogs CNS essays
Dissection and Isolation of a frogs CNS essays Dissection of an adult bullfrog's central nervous system (CNS) Experiment consists of the dissection and analyzation of a bullfrogs nervous system. Dissection consists of the isolation of the CNS consisting of the brain and spinal cord. It also consists of analyzing the nervous tissue under the microscope. Materials needed: frog, scalpel, razor blade, dissecting tray, pins, forceps, scissors, microscope, slides, slide covers, water, blue dye, diagram of frogs brain, paper towel. The bullfrogs CNS is composed of the brain, which is further divided into the olfactory bulb, cerebrum, optic tract, optic lobe, pituitary gland, and the cerebellum. Also contained within the CNS is the spinal cord which in contained within the spine The brain was about an inch in length and à ¾ of an inch in diameter. The spinal cord was about 2.5 inches in length and the diameter of the spine was about 1/8 of an inch. The cerebellum in the frogs brain is very small in comparison to the rest of the brain and also to the size of the cerebellum in other animals compared to the size of their brains. Place the frog in the dissecting tray so the ventral section faces upwards with the head pointing away from you. This will allow for easier access to the CNS since you dont have to cut through the skull. Pin each of its legs down to the tray using the pins. Using the scalpel start the incision at the base of the jaw. This will be a superficial cut just enough to cut through the skin. Pull the scalpel in a caudal direction towards the tail. After youve done this make another incision lateral to where you started the first one and another one where you ended the cut. Pull the skin back and either cut it off or pin it down. Muscle of the breastbone and abdomen will be exposed. Using the scissors make a deep cut through this, again cutting in a caudal direction to the tail. Cut off the arms of the bullfrog and r ...

Definition and Examples of Marginal Modals in English
Definition and Examples of Marginal Modals in English In English grammar, a marginal modal is a verb (such as dare, need, used to, ought to) that displays some but not all of the properties of an auxiliary. The marginal modals all have meanings that are related to necessity and advice.à A marginal modal can be used as either an auxiliary or a main verb. Examples I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us.(Franz Kafka, letter to Oscar Pollack, January 27, 1904)I used to live in a room full of mirrors. All I could see was me.(Jimi Hendrix, Room Full Of Mirrors)For Children: You will need to know the difference between Friday and a fried egg. Its quite a simple difference, but an important one. Friday comes at the end of the week, whereas a fried egg comes out of a chicken.(Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time. Crown, 2002) Characteristics of Marginal Modals Neither the marginal modal nor any of the modal idioms form past or present participles (thus *I have oughted to work hard, *I am oughting to work hard). And although very few semi-auxiliaries participate in compound tenses, a few function adequately as perfects (I have been able/going to/obliged/willing to work hard, I have been about to work hard on several occasions, I have had to work hard) and only two are unquestionably acceptable as progressives (I am being obliged to work hard, I am having to work hard). As a general rule, semi-auxiliaries are reluctant to enter compound tenses.(Richard V. Teschner and Eston E. Evans, Analyzing the Grammar of English, 3rd ed. Georgetown Universityà Press, 2007) Dare and Need As Marginal Modals ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹As modal verbs, dare and need take a bare infinitive complement in negated and/or inverted structures. They do not have third person singular forms.(128) Or darent you ask?(129) You neednt read every chapter.(130) And dare I suggest that that is the match-winner?(131) Nor need I look further than my own city of Sheffield. As a marginal modal verb need has no past tense: we cannot say, for example *He needed read every chapter. It expresses necessity which is clearly a central modal meaning. Dare is not obviously modal from the point of view of meaning, though it is forward-looking, and is sometimes regarded as instantiating dynamic modality, due to the fact that the act of daring relates to the subject of the clause.(Bas Aarts, Oxford Modern English Grammar. Oxford University Press, 2011)The verb dare . . . is an odd little word. . . . Sometimes its called a marginal modal, but I prefer the description quasi modal. Either label, dare hovers between being an ordinary ga rden-variety verb meaning to challenge and one of these more abstract and grammatically complex verbs conveying a judgment about likelihoodand its this double life that gives rise to some fairly eccentric behaviour. Consider how it forms a negative. Do you say I darent (pronounced darent or dairnt), I dare not, or I dont care? T.S. Eliot might have chosen to phrase the question in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock as Do I dare to eat a peach? but some of you might prefer Dare I eat a peach? The word order is different, and its also variable whether or not you follow dare with to.Colloquial English is full of these quasi modals. The verb need is one, and so are contracted expressions such as gonna, wanna and halfta. But one of my current favourites is better as in I better do it.(Kate Burridge, Weeds in the Garden of Words: Further Observations on the Tangled History of the English Language. Cambridge Universityà Press, 2005) Used to As a Marginal Modal Used to occurs only in the past tense form, and always includes to. We do not say * I use to go or * I used go. In the negative form, some people prefer it as a main verb (but are often uncertain about the spelling): I didnt (use(d) to go. Others prefer it as an auxiliary verb: I usent/used not to go (especially in Britain).(David Crystal, Rediscover Grammar, 3rd ed. Longman, 2004)[T]here are a number of marginal auxiliaries (dare, need, ought to, used to) that share some of the characteristics of the auxiliaries and a larger group of semi-auxiliaries (auxiliary-like verbs) that convey similar notions of time, aspect, and modality (e.g.: be going to, have to, had better).(Sidney Greenbaum, Oxford English Grammar. Oxford Universityà Press, 1996) Also Known As: marginal auxiliary, marginal modal auxiliary, semi-modal, quasi-modal, semi-auxiliary

When Harry Met Sally and Mark Knapp's 10 Stages of Relational Movie Review
When Harry Met Sally and Mark Knapp's 10 Stages of Relational Development - Movie Review Example This research will begin with the statement that a relationship between two individual always passes through different phases. Rob Reiner's romantic comedy When Harry Met Sallyà is a movie which gives an idea about how a relationship can grow between two strangers, what are the different phases their relationship can pass through and what are the common characteristics that a relationship can have. When Harry Met Sally is a romantic movie directed by Rob Reiner, released in 1989. The main two characters of the movie Harry and Sally were played byà Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The movie begins with two unfamiliar persons Harry and Sally, newly graduated from the University of Chicago jointly travel in a car from Chicago to New York, a place where they would find their living. In this movie, for a period of 11 years, during the basic stage of their relationship, both Harry and Sally debated about a common fact and that was can a man and women be a non-sexual friend or not. If we ana lyze both the characters, Harry give the impression of carefree attitude, but is doubtful enough to ââ¬Å"read the last page of a book firstâ⬠; in case he dies, he says, ââ¬Å"at least he'll know how it ends. And know-it-all Sally insists that Ingrid Bergman really wanted to leave Humphrey Bogart. From the dialogue of Sally, ''I don't want to spend the rest of my life in Casablanca with a guy who owns a barâ⬠her attitude towards life becomes very clear and also clearly represents who she is at that point of time. It presents the story of ten years down the line when Sally had a break up with her boyfriend and Harryââ¬â¢s wife left him and they again become best friends. Mark Knapp's 10 stages of Relational Development and the movie Harry Met Sally: To analyze the relationship development, Mark Knapp discussed10 different stages associated with it. Adler and Rodman in their book discussed all these stages. Although it is not an interpersonal theory still according to his concept the ten stages of an interpersonal relationship are ââ¬Å"Initiating, Experimenting, Intensifying, Integrating, Bonding, Differentiating, Circumscribing, Stagnating, Avoiding, and finally Terminatingâ⬠. If one analyzes the movie When Harry Met Sally, it is very clear that relationship development not always follow Knappââ¬â¢s 10 stage of development. If we analyze the movie then it is clear that out of first five stage of relationship development initiating was started when they first meet, then they were trying to find out whether a friendship among boys and girl can happen without any sexual relation, that is the experimenting phase. Later on, their friendship intensifies but it was split asunder after a spur-of-the-moment night of passion when she was upset about an ex-marrying someone else. The flow of the movie also resembles the way Adler and Rodman mentioned in their book about the flow of stages of relationship development among them. Their relationships have the stages of initiation, then integration of their thought process, and then they slowly started to like each other as their bonding grew. The main thought process which they were thinking about was related to whether friendship only related to sex or not. As they started to get involved in own personal life, slowly their interaction decreases, as mentioned by Adler and Rodman, it was the circumscribing stage. This was followed by avoiding. But when in their own life both of them separated from their partners they meet again, and during that time they do not have the necessity to start the relationship from the first stage again. Another key point associated with this movie is the self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is a key part of the integrating stage of the relationship development. When any couple reaches the integrating stage they are already very close to one another.

Hardship Letter Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Hardship Letter - Essay Example Some may think we are truly naà ¯ve and impractical to believe in these vows, but those vows and our love have kept us truly together. We have cherished each moment we have been together and we would love it to remain as happy as we have been and include other family members. We wish to have children. If we have not had children up till this moment is because of my physical condition, my desire to continue my studies, and adapting to a new lifestyle (marriage). The first years of a marriage are crucial. Ten years from now, we will be in our late 30s. An age most people already have a stable family. We would hope that by that time we have already formed a family of our own, have had a home of our own, and have our children playing in the yard in this great country of The United States of America (USA). We would love to have that wish fulfilled, to live happily and enjoy life to its fullest in this land of opportunities. To achieve these dreams, I am currently working very hard to pay my way through higher education in exchange for a steady future, but without my wife keeping me company, my future has no sense of direction. It is impossible to build a family and dreams when we are to be apart. We have made commitments to remain together, to strive for what we believe in and what we want, and to make accomplishments together. Without my wife, our dreams of having our own children at a young, productive and reproductive stage of our lives would be seemingly impossible and senseless. I have been diagnosed as having a sub-fertile a condition where it is extremely difficult for my wife to conceive naturally unless we seek the help of medical professionals to perform an artificial procedure called IUI, as suggested by our physician. Consequently, the procedure would require both my wife and I to be present. If my wife is not here, the chances of her pregnancy are obscure if not to say impossible. This will mean that unless we are
Macroeconomic Analysis of the Indian Economy Assignment
Macroeconomic Analysis of the Indian Economy - Assignment Example 8). Gross domestic product Gross domestic product indicates an economyââ¬â¢s productivity and possible investment advantages from the economy. High gross domestic product shows positive prospects and increasing trend implies a growing economy with investment opportunities and high demand for utilities among its citizens (Dwivedi 2012, p. 55). Indiaââ¬â¢s gross domestic product is relatively high; it has been estimated at about $ 1867 billion and its possible implications on the proposed investment can be explored from its trend. Trend in the countryââ¬â¢s economic data for the past eight years identifies an increasing gross domestic product and this shows an increasing productivity level. The economy reported gross domestic product at about $ 834 billion in 2006, a value that increased to about $ 949 billion in the fiscal year ended in 2007, and $ 1238.6 billion in the fiscal year ended 2008. The economyââ¬â¢s gross domestic product recorded $ 1867.4 billion by the year. This trend identifies the economyââ¬â¢s growth potentials and it is therefore suitable for the proposed investment. The increasing trend also means availability of utilities and employment opportunities (Exim Bank 2013, p. 1). Service industry is the most active in the economy followed by the industrial sector. The service industry contributes more than half of the economyââ¬â¢s gross domestic product with the industrial and agricultural sector as the other major contributors. A review of the gross domestic product by sectors over the past eight years further identifies a decline in significance of the agricultural sector to the economy and an increase in significance of the service industryââ¬â¢s significance. Significance of the industrial sector has however been constant. The agricultural sector and its... This paper makes a conclusion that consumer price index is another significant indicator for evaluation. Consumers prices have been gaining stability over the past years and this further ascertain stability in money value. The countryââ¬â¢s consumer index is however high and this communicates high living standards besides high ability to spend. Further, the high propensity to spend communicates high local demand for the investment should it be done in India. Foreign direct investment into the economy has been increasing and the trend identifies recognition of the countryââ¬â¢s investment potentials by global investors. The macroeconomic indicators therefore identify positive investment prospects with the Indian economy because the indicators have been improving in the past years. The economyââ¬â¢s gross domestic product, exchange rate, current account balance, foreign direct investment, and consumer price index indicate increasing stability. In addition, the countryââ¬â¢s political environment, accessibility to the global economy, and its investment oriented fiscal and monetary policies identify its suitability to the companyââ¬â¢s proposed investment. Its inflation rate and the low unemployment rate, however, raise concerns of potential economic challenges. Poor technology may further challenge the investment, but technology can be imported. This report therefore recommends the Indian economy for the proposed investments because of the diverse economic advantages that outweighs the possible disadvantages.

Employee Relations System in Singapore and Eire Essay
Employee Relations System in Singapore and Eire - Essay Example In addition, it should also be flexible. (Schregle, 1981) There are certain theories that will act as a background and baseline for this comparative analysis. The first one was brought forward by a human resource management author called Douglas McGregor. This author strongly believed in the power that the human being has within an organisation. He claimed that management is dependent on its employees just as the latter need the former. McGregor believed that management have the ability to determine whether or not their organisation was a success depending on how they chose to carry forward their management practices. The author came up with a human relations theory called theory Y. In this theory, he asserted that all employees have the capacity to change. Consequently, management should endeavour to match employee goals and objectives to the organisation. Since these employees were able to grow in terms of their capacity to handle greater responsibility and to grow position wise, management should try its best to match their overall developmental activities within the organisation to individual ones. Indeed, theory Y forms one of the major guidelines for good employee-relations-systems in any country. We will therefore use this as a sort of barometer to check on the legitimacy and appropriateness of the employee relations between the two countries under study. Another theory that will also serve as a backbone in the essay is the theory of the three S's as postulated by Bartlett and Ghoshal; where the three S's are strategy, systems and structures. In this theory, the two authors believed that management had the distinct and fundamental responsibility to come up with organisational strategy. This would lay the foundation for organisational structures within any one organisation. In this management system, more emphasis is placed on the importance of aligning employees to organisational behaviour. Adherents to this theory assert that human beings can be replaced and must therefore not be the focus in human resource management. This is why most activities are seen as a form of control and enforcement of discipline by employers towards their employees. Organisations and countries adhering to this theory are quite hierarchal. Beside this, their structures precede their strategies. (Bartlett and Sumantra, 1994) The latter theory is slowly phasing out. This has come after the realisation that the most useful resource within any company is its human resource. Employees have the ability to be creative and to apply knowledge appropriately to suite any given organisation. Consequently, there is a need to adopt a totally different approach to management. Most developed countries realise that there are no returns when the organisation places too much emphasis on controlling its employees because this only serves as backbone for conflicts. The better approach is to try and create a rich corporate culture and clearly defined organisational objectives. Besides this, employee relation systems are moving way from the need to

Case Study - Essay Example She has already been availing the benefits of a bi-cultural worker and this may have helped her to some extent because she is already on the way to inclusion in early childhood(Grisham brown et al, 2005). Rayanââ¬â¢s teacher in the baby class has provided some important information about her habits. Firstly, she appears to share a good relationship with her father because she enjoys gardening with him during the weekends. Secondly, the teacher also informs that she likes playing with dolls and smiles at other children but does not actively play with them. Both of Rayanââ¬â¢s parents want their child to be more actively involved with her peers and to interact with them. Relevant issues which may need to be taken into account in terms of preparing an effective plan of action would be the Disability Standards of 2005, which have mandated that all students must be accorded more or less the same treatment and have equal access to educational facilities and learning. Since Rayan is hearing impaired, she has a disability and as a result, applying the provisions of the Disability Standards may require some adjustments to be made, such that Rayan can be treated on par with the other non disabled students she is in class with. It may be necessary to consider how best Rayanââ¬â¢s hearing impairment can be tackled and compensated for so that she does not miss out on any of the learning activities. In order to achieve higher levels of participation from the child, it may be vital to ensure that measures are put into place to deal with the hearing impairment, so that conditions are created which will facilitate interaction between Rayan and the other childre n. While the FM receiver has been used in the baby classes and Rayan has also enjoyed the support of a bi-cultural worker, this does not appear to have translated into higher levels of social interaction. The major objective that needs to be achieved in Rayanââ¬â¢s case is to ensure

Race Relations Essay Example for Free
Race Relations Essay Humanity has been enduring an ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations among the races. Despite efforts to put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a strong sense of racial dissension. While many Caucasians do not see the problem being as severe as it is represented, African-Americans angrily reply that the lighter skinned race has not had to endure such prejudice and, therefore, cannot begin to identify with the situation. Frank Newport, vice president of the Gallup Poll Organization, says Caucasian Americans do not interpret racism as a big problem, therefore, they do not see a need for government intervention (Anonymous, 1997; 04A). Similarly, Asians, Hispanics and other United States minorities believe they often receive unfair treatment because of their race. However, President Clinton and several organizations including the National Multicultural Institute, whose main focus is to sort out the jumble of expectations and fears that swirl around the initiatives struggle to reconcile ethnicity and difference with the notion of one American nation (Green, 1998; PG) are pushing hard to mend racial tension with a comprehensive program that is designed to bring all races together. Will it work? Or will minorities look upon the effort as nothing more than a Band-Aid covering a much larger issue? To some extent, concepts such as affirmative action have their place in society, yet they will do nothing to alter an individuals perception of one race or another. In the past, childrenââ¬â¢s racial viewpoints have routinely been shaped by their parents perceptions. This is precisely how racial prejudice is passed down from generation to generation. However, todays teens appear to be breaking free of the antiquated procession by voicing their own opinions about race relations. While racial hate crimes continue to run rampant, the newer generation tends to believe there is less interracial tension than do their parents (Farley, 1997). What has instigated this considerably lax attitude among the younger generation is not quite clear; yet a TIME/CNN poll has discovered that the adolescent population is far more forgiving of racial prejudices than their adult counterparts. Of twelve hundred, eighty-two adults and six hundred one teenagers aged twelve to seventeen; the younger sect demonstrated a considerable amount of racial tolerance toward one another when compared with the older respondents (Farley, 1997). If given the opportunity, children and young adults will not adopt negative views of other races if they are not placed in such an environment that encourages such thought. However, with the deep-seated hatred that has been bred into so many generations, it has become difficult for some of those prejudice intentions not to trickle down the family line. Yet the TIME/CNN poll was instrumental in establishing that a good number of adolescence of all races have successfully moved beyond their parents views of race (Farley, 1997; 88+). To the kids with such an open mind, race is no more important to them in either a social or personal level; yet it is not to be overlooked that these same respondents were still able to recognize the fact that racism was one of Americas biggest problems today. Even so, over one-third said the problem though it exists is insignificant (Farley, 1997; 88+). As it relates to their own lives, eighty-nine percent of the African-American adolescents who responded said the problem was small or did not exist at all. Amazingly, the Caucasian respondents ââ¬â both young and old considered racism a more dominant issue (Farley, 1997; 88+) than did the African-American adolescent respondents. What does that say about the varying impressions of race relations? Depending upon which race is viewing the issue, it appears the seriousness of the problem could be considerably damaging or an insignificant obstacle. Still, optimism is high that the younger generation deems race relations as being in good standing. This may be a sign of hope (Farley, 1997; 88+) or nothing more than youthful naivete (88+); regardless, it demonstrates a long awaited shift in the social climate relating to race relations and its consequences. Sociologist Joe R. Feagin says the answer may lie with both options. His interpretation of the lack of adolescent racism is that reality has not fully set in for those who have not yet experienced the real world. You have to be out looking for jobs and housing to know how much discrimination is out there (Farley, 1997; 88+). Feagin contends that those who have a better grasp of racial reality are those who are over the age of nineteen. Reasoning behind this is that comparatively few African-American teenage respondents said they had been victimized by discrimination; contrarily, half of the African-American adults admitted they had (Farley, 1997). Experts are concerned that adolescents are being too gullible when it comes to realizing the truth of the matter. Others contend that perhaps they are willfully setting a precedence for others to follow that will ultimately initiate a genuine improvement in race relations. It is not as though contemporary teenagers do not have knowledge of history and its negative treatment of minority races; rather, it appears they have more faith in their own future than their parents did before them. Additionally, todays youth are trying to move away from the typical scapegoating (Farley, 1997; 88+) that has become so commonplace in society. Suspicions arise with poll results, however, in that they do not always reflect the truth; many people are more apt to give socially acceptable (Farley, 1997; 88+) answers rather than what is truly in their hearts. Yet this is not likely to be the contention of teenagers who, for the most part, speak more freely and true to form than adults. A believer in this concept is sociologist Howard Pinderhuges, author of Race in the Hood: Conflict and Violence Among Urban Youth, who firmly contends that teenagers are genuine. Teenagers are a mirror of our souls. They speak plainly about things that adults would like to hide. Political correctness isnt an issue to them. Youre more likely to get what they think unfiltered (Farley, 1997; 88+). Still, through all this optimism, there exists an invisible boundary line that, even though race relations seem to be improving, keeps the races separated. Seventeen-year-old Danny, one of the TIME/CNN respondents, commented that his friends consisted more of African-Americans than Caucasians. This, in and of itself, was not as enlightening as was his admission of the fact that we just talk in school (Farley, 1997; 88+), not allowing the relationship to progress into ones personal territory. It was a normal occurrence for none of Dannys African-American friends to visit him at home or for him to go to theirs; the lines of separation were clearly drawn. Experts consider this to be accountable in large part to the amount of violence that takes place in the crime-plagued housing projects (Farley, 1997; 88+) where many of his friends live. The situation is far from unusual. Even among African-American youths, the interpretation of neighborhood safety has its variations. According to the TIME/CNN poll, forty percent of African-American teenagers claim to have known someone in their age group who has been killed, whereas just fifteen percent of Caucasian teenagers said they had experienced the same. Interestingly, African-American youths believe they are treated unfairly by enforcement officers, while one-third believe they are at risk (Farley, 1997; 88+) of receiving unfair treatment. Just one of five Caucasian youths feels the same. John Hope Franklin, head of President Clintons race relations task force, claims genuine racial betterment will not arrive until you have improvement in the home conditions of kids of all kinds (Farley, 1997; 88+). An intriguing informal study gives an indication of how racial difference runs deep within an individuals psyche. Psychologist and author Beverly Tatum, who recently wrote Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? , routinely poses the following question to psychology students: I am _______. What is most interesting about the answers she receives is the fact that Caucasian students fill in the blank with an adjective describing their personalities or characters, whereas students of other races are more apt to finish the sentence identifying their ethnicity. According to Tatum, such racial recognition is born out of adolescent peer pressure, societal influences and self-reflection (Farley, 1997; 88+). Polls are regularly put to use to determine the public climate on race relations. A recent USA TODAY survey of more than two thousand college freshmen from around the country reported that forty-five percent perceived race relations as having a positive stance within society; in all, two percent thought relations between African-Americans and Caucasians were excellent (Kohen, 1998; PG). A poll in The Independent, a British publication, noted that one-third of the Caucasians believed one should marry only within ones race (Forna, 1998; 1, 2). Granted, views of younger generations may be quite a bit more diverse than those of the older sect, but those younger views are what will ultimately shape the future of the country. Being on campus allows people the opportunity to intermingle more frequently with those of other races, which may give them the false impression that the rest of the world is as friendly with one another as they are at school. Unlike out in the real world, campus life encourages the fraternization of racial groups, attempting to overthrow the narrow- mindedness often found on the streets of reality. Noel Barrion, Asian American Student Union president, observes this difference each and everyday he looks to see who is sitting next to one another in the school cafeteria. Racial discrimination is out there. People just arent aware (Kohen, 1998; PG). Barrion says the AASU works hard to bridge the gap that separates the races as they exist on campus. Naima Stevenson, Black Student Union President, says the solution to combating racial discrimination (Kohen, 1998; PG) is to keep the lines of communication as wide open as possible in order to confront the complexity and richness of in the United States (Delgado, 1997; 39A). Because of this forward moving attitude, the relationship between the two campus racial organizations is in good standing. Says Barrion: The vehicle between us becoming friends is the desire to be involved (Kohen, 1998; PG). Both Stevenson and Barrion admit to the difficulty of establishing just how much race relations have changed for the worse or better during their short stay at college, but they both have reason to remain positive that future change will be for the better. For Stevenson, looking back after several years to find a marked improvement in campus race relations would be ideal. They both believe that if relations continue in the manner they currently are, this would not be such an unexpected occurrence (Kohen, 1998; PG). However, it is not uncommon to find just the opposite opinion from other students. The USA TODAY poll revealed that far more African-Americans sense the negativity with regard to race relations than does any other race. Yet despite actions in place to bridge the racial gap, those like Barrion and Stevenson believe far more can be done than the efforts currently available on American college campuses. While the opportunity is there for expansion, there is just not enough diversity on campus (Kohen, 1998; PG). It looks like it will still be the same problem going into the new millennium. Theres plenty of opportunity to meet someone of another culture or that you would have never known about before (Kohen, 1998; PG). President Clinton has set his sights on bridging the racial gap in an effort to improve the countrys deteriorating race relations (McFeatters, 1997; 68). By using his clout as Chief Executive and standing behind the affirmative action policy, Clinton hopes to turn around some of the prejudice that continues to spread across the land. A speech he gave at the Million Man March in Texas in 1995 effectively forecasted Americas situation as one where an inordinate number of people fear deep down inside that theyll never quite be able to see each other as more than enemy faces, all of whom carry a sliver of bigotry in their hearts (McFeatters, 1997; 68). Clinton contends that America must clean its house of racism; that a house divided against itself cannot stand (McFeatters, 1997; 68). While these words ring true, it is not clear as to what the President intends to do in the long run to curb racism in the United States. One thing he does propose is a more fair system of dispersing wage earnings among African-Americans, of who only one-fourth make upwards of thirty-five thousand dollars a year compared to one-half of all Caucasian Americans (McFeatters, 1997; 68). Speaking on the topic of integration, President Clinton agreed with Franklin who proposed the only way to clear the cloudy air of racism was to encourage open and honest dialogue (McFeatters, 1997; 68) among the races; that it was, indeed, the critical first step (68) in the direction of genuine racial integration. Other critics say it is time to end the reliance on racism as an explanatory concept (Wortham, 1996; 253) for all racial problems and move beyond the black-white paradigm (Gold, 1998; B-2) when the topic turns to race relations. When we say true integration, we mean the opportunity of every American to develop to the fullest extent of his capacity. We mean that every individual regardless then of regardless of religion, regardless of ethnicity, every American has an opportunity, should have an opportunity to move forward as rapidly as his talents, his or her talents, and as rapidly as the opportunities open (Page et al, 1998; PG). Indias Anti-Corruption Movements
Indias Anti-Corruption Movements Kanika Dass 1.0 Introduction These days corruption is the word occurring maximum in the print and electronic media and the mind of the people in India today is constantly preoccupied with no other item as the issue of corruption. There are scams galore today which is happening in every corner of our country so that the country is even nicknamed as ââ¬Å"Scamstanâ⬠which means land of scams. Perhaps in India the most chanted word next to Gods name is Corruption. According to Elliot and Meril writes, ââ¬Å"Corruption is a willful failure to perform a specified duty in order to receive some direct or indirect personal gainâ⬠[1]. Thus in corruption a person willfully neglects his specified duty in order to have undue advantage. In fact to call an act corruption, the following characteristics should be present namely, in corruption the specified duty is neglected, there is a willful negligence of the duty and have a personal gain. The prevention of corruption act which proposed in 1988 defines, ââ¬Å"Cor ruption means and includes all corrupt activities notified by a body designed by the government from time to timeâ⬠. 2.0 Combating corruption In India a three pronged approach is advocated in combating corruption namely enactment and enforcement of a law against it, mobilization of public opinion against behavior, and the strict vigilance. Accordingly the Indian legal system came up with The Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) 1988, chapter 9 of our Indian Penal Code (IPC) states the measure for the violation of corruption by the citizen of the country, and it also state that any citizens found in this act is liable under criminal conduct under the judiciary. In chapter IX A under no.171-B of the Indian Penal Code, Bribery is defined under offences relating to moral misconduct and criminal activity. Indian judiciary has introduced various commissions to check corruption namely, The Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). The lokpal bill has along chequered history as it was first rooted in 1968 in terms of the recommendation of the administrative reforms commission. The introduction of The Right to Information Act (RTI) has given the right to citizens to force the government to lifts its veil of secrecy and ensure a corrupt-free system. In spite of this during Nehru era we had innumerable commissions of inquiry on corruption namely, The Railway Corruption Inquiry Committee under Acharya Kripalani (1953), The Vivian Bose Commission (1962), The Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption (1964), The Wanchoo Committee on Black Money (1974). After these unsuccessful commissions hailed the campaign of Anna Hazare with his team of Santhosh Hedge, the retired Lokayukta of Karnataka, RTI activist Arvind Kejarwal, former Police officer Kiran Bedi and others came forward to mobilize young people to the cause and to gain the massive support to the Hazare movement they invited middle class and the young gene ration of the country to protest against corruption in the country.[2] 3.0 Anna Hazare`s Anti-Corruption Movement I would be wrong if I say the fight against corruption began with this movement because the awareness had begun earlier but it was more hidden and less intense in action. With the nexus of the state with corporations, the poor losing more and more of their assets and the governing class increasing their wealth and publicly vulgarizing it, there was a pent up anger among the people of the country which the government underestimated. And this gradually turns into movement and these anti corruption movement had the following context for the movement namely, About 15% of the 548 Lok Sabha and 245 Rajya Sabha MPs face serious criminal charge for murder, rape and extortion. A high court judge of west Bengal faces impeachment by parliament and the chief justice of Sikkim took voluntary retirement. There have been serious charges of corruption against some judges of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has voices concern over corruption in the lower levels of Judiciary. An ex-cabinet minister, a sitting MP and a few corporate honchos are in jail facing serious corruption charges for cheating thousands of crores of our money. The commonwealth games which should have been a showcase of excellence to remember, is now remembered for completely the reasons of corruption and this is the symbolic of a rotten governance system in every walk of our life. The members of parliament have been increasing their salaries perks and allowances. People in the country do not believe that our parliamentarians need that sum of money for the services they render; it is the national wealth that they have been engulfing. Parliament has not functioned for several days with parliamentarians collecting their perks and salaries for the work done and meetings not attended. Several chief ministers in state have been involved in corruption of great magnitude. Their land deals, mining operations, oil scandals and involvement in financial and business deals have lowered their status and dignity in the public realm. Elections have become a mockery. Where candidates and parties try to outdo each other during elections by corrupt deals. Promises are made that are never implemented, all kinds of tricks are adopted, and people are divided on various grounds. Posts are auctioned. Even the teachers, police officers and people in the administration have to pay bribes for transfers. Ordinary employees of the state-clerks, peons and the others are caught with huge excess and unaccounted wealth that does not belong to them. It is a robbery of public wealth. Those close to the administration have unaccounted money.[3] These were few of the contexts of the Anti Corruption Movement led by Anna Hazare. These issues were addressed in the lokpal bill. 3.1 The Evaluation and the Limitations of Movement I feel this movement had worked for the instant solutions to the immediate problems, where the changes in any society are slow and gradual. The other major aspect which involved in the movement were the middle class people of the society who had only material cause in their minds of getting things at the cheaper rate by bringing back the black money to the country and during the movement there were many money (profit oriented) factor came into picture. We used the Gandhian symbols of white-cloth caps mixed with new age symbols of candles but there ideology was about market exchanges.[4] And this movement was not a social justice movement like our Independence movement because any movement should be driven by the masses but this movement is driven by a single person who is transformed as a messiah by a disillusioned people. Corruption by those in power is all about he invites people to fight against. The method to get rid of that corruption for hazare is all about a law to be enacted. What a simple solution for a complicated problem! What Anna is determined to do is mobilize the people, dictate a bill to the parliament, and ask them to act. This is authoritarianism because in democracy all voices have to be heard and decisions can be made only through dialogue. This bill needed wide consultation and the team of Anna Hazare alone does not constitute civil society. On the other hand bill needed to bring everyone into accountability because judiciary and the parliamentarians were not under the bill. Take the case of India`s caste system where we are not able eradicate it. The caste system is a socio-religious corruption which is more dangerous than the corruption Anna Hazare engaged to fight against. Dalits still suffer untold pain and discrimination because of this corruption it is like a cancer and this caste corruption is on the increase manifested in different forms. Why was Anna Hazare silent on caste corruption? We have a social evil of prostitution thrives in the name of religion (Devadasi system), female feticide is concern. , we had anti-Sikh riots in 1984, Gujarat genocide of 2002, Kandhamal riots of 2008-09, these are form of corruption that has destroyed and divided our society, and many questioned where Anna was during this situation? Dalit columnist Chandrabhan Prasad says, ââ¬Å"The Anna Hazare phenomenon is leading us to the rejection of representative democracy and this movement is against the India`s political democracy itselfâ⬠[5]. Because those involved in the movement want everybody to believe that only politicians are corrupt. 4.0 Conclusion The massive participation of youngsters in anti-corruption movement led by team Anna is seen to achieve hidden interests of invisible forces. As the team had good financial support from where did this aid come from to a normal social activist. Anna followed fasting method in the protest which was considered has the warning and treat for the nations by Mahatma Gandhi he also said people should not go on hunger strike after the independence of our country. Being the follower of Gandhi, Anna has disobeyed what Gandhi has asked us to follow. This movement has brought a class of people to the politics in the notion of making a difference. The public opinion is valued in governance but that public opinion cannot be based on the class interests. The common people are affected by the corruption of our country and we have also contributed to it. Blood, Violence And Gore As Entertainment :: essays research papers
Blood, Violence and Gore As Entertainment à à à à à The Texas Chainsaw massacre, Braineaters from outer space and Bloodfeast are all films were the title can speak for itself. The are films were violence, blood and gore play an important role. It is obvious that someone has to action, but who? à à à à à Since the dawn of man people have used violence for entertainment. In Rome they had the Colluseum, nowadays we have the cinema. Violent films are being produced all the time, no one seems to care. Even though there aren't many people who are harmed from these films, there are a lot of children who do. It is a question of separating reality and fiction, and that is a problem for many children. After the Superman films in the 1980's, there were a series of children jumping off tall buildings, because they though they were Superman. As you grow older, this doesn't seem to be a problem any longer, even though there have been incidents were adults have started to kill people after watching a violent film. An example of this is the controversial film Natural Born Killers. Over twenty people lost their lives because of this film. In this film murder and violence are justified, and it is these films that affect children the most. à à à à à Computer violence is a quite new phenomenon. It was introduced with the launch of Wolfenstein in 1990. In à «Wolfensteinà » you are trapped in a maze among an army of nazis. You'll have to kill your way out. This kind of violence probably has a deeper influence on children, because they do the killings themselves. It is interactive violence. In several countries the follow-up game, Doom, was banned. The software company claimed that it didn't have a negative affect on children, because they killed mutants, not humans.

Marissa Nunez Essay
1.Marissa Nunez had been working for two years at McDonaldââ¬â¢s when she wrote ââ¬Å"Climbing the Golden Archesâ⬠. This experience had many effects on her. For example; she learned many things like you have to start from the bottom to work your way up to the top. She learned this because from working at McDonaldââ¬â¢s, there are many things that need to be done. Sometimes, you have to fill in for someone, even if that isnââ¬â¢t your position so it is best to know all of the jobs at the business . 2.Marissa found many work experiences to be useful for situations in the future. For example; many customers can be very rude and mean. One customer called her a name, and told her to mind her own business when all Marissa was trying to do was help her. Even though the customer called her a bad name and was giving her trouble, she kept quiet and got the manager to deal with the situation. If she said something to the customer, she would have gotten into trouble. This shows that she knows how to handle situations and sometimes it is best to keep your mouth closed because its not worth losing your job over. 3.By working at McDonaldââ¬â¢s, Marissa hopes to become a manager at McDonaldââ¬â¢s. To achieve this goal, Marissa plans on continuing to attend the class that is required. In this class she gets observed on how well she deals with customers, and then gets a grade on how well she does. Marissa also has to take an exam to become a manager. By doing all of these things, Marissa can achieve her goal of being manager. Words and Figures of Speech: 1.Marissa puts ââ¬Å"battle of the sexesâ⬠in quotation marks because it is the name of a game. 2.In connection with restaurant work, the word station means a part of the restaurant. For example; in the reading a station is the grill, then the cash register. 3.The word ââ¬Å"Archesâ⬠in the essay title, means that someoneââ¬â¢s career goals have many ups and downs leading to the goal but you have to work through it to be successful. ââ¬Å"Goldenâ⬠means the good things that happen while youââ¬â¢re working your way up to the top to your goal. 4.In this essay, Marissa defines ââ¬Å"funâ⬠as the store being closed for remodeling, and the grand opening was about to happen. Another example ofà ââ¬Å"funâ⬠to Marissa was having a ââ¬Å"battle of the sexesâ⬠at work. This shows that she really loves work, and the people that she works with.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions 1. 1 Change or remove the negati ve components that surround your life. Don't let others bog down your life and keep you from reaching the success you have in front of you. Recon negative environmental factors in your life that influence how you feel about yourself. Sometimes this will mean shedding bad friends from your life or even making a whole new change in your social circle. 2. 2 My next step or tool for you to become confident is to change ââ¬Å"what you can. Looks are not as important to mature adults as many think, but what we do with our looks does matter. You may never have the celebrity looks, but you can make the best with what you were given. Go to the gym, or run, or do yoga. Anything that will make you feel better about yourself and your body. Don't complain that you have no boyfriend/girlfriend yet you're overweight or spend no time taking care of yourself. Don't do it for anyone else, do it for yourself. Self confidence will only go up if you can look in the mirror and know you're giving it your all. 3. 3 Quit procrastinating in your life.Well what does procrastination have to do with someone being becoming confident you might ask? You can't build a high state of confidence if you're stressed out because you waited to the last minute to do a college essay or pay the electric bill. There's so many examples I could point out, but the less you leave till the last minute, the more you have time for the fun stuff in life. Stress is a confidence killer. 4. 4 Buy something that makes you feel hot about yourself. You know that feeling you get when you have on a nice shirt, some nice jeans or ladies a really nice outfit that just makes you feel sexy about yourself? You wear that outfit to work, or school or with that special someone, you just feel and do better that day. That is easy self confidence. There's no need to go change your wardrobe and only buy really expensive clothes, but everyone should have one outfit that they can put on to give themselves a little extra pep in their step. 5. 5 Remember that you like yourself and you're always looking for ways to improve yourself. When I stumbled upon self compliments, I turned a new page in my quest to become a more confident person. Every day tell yourself that you like yourself or that you are a great person 10 times.EVERY DAY. It'll become habit after awhile and it'll become cemented in your sub-conscious and your self confidence will multiply by leaps and bounds. You have to like yourself first and foremost before you can care how anyone else feels about you. Just simply look at the amount of celebrities who have all the fame and money, but yet run their lives into the ground with drugs or alcohol because they dislike themselves. 6. 6 Forgive yourself and others. I had to let go of a lot of bad feelings I had about what I'd done/not done in my past and how others treated me in my past. You can't change the past and it'll only keep your progress limited if you keep harboring bad feelings. Forgive yourself an d others. Let yourself find peace and you'll make room for more self confidence in your life.
